Report on Osteoporosis in Australia

Report on Osteoporosis in Australia

A new report released on 4 September from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) acknowledges osteoporosis is a serious health issue in Australia and is expected to become more common with an ageing population.

The report notes that prevalence of osteoporosis is often under-reported and that the disease has no obvious symptoms.

Gail Morgan, CEO of Osteoporosis Australia said “Often a broken bone is the first sign someone has osteoporosis, but this is the wrong way round, we need to stop that first fracture by checking bone health earlier”, “We encourage people with risk factors for osteoporosis to talk to their doctor and get a bone check-up if needed” she said.

Osteoporosis Australia provides fact sheets on calcium, vitamin D and exercise  for maintaining bone health and raises awareness about bone density testing through the How Dense Are You? campaign.
