Are you a guy at risk of having osteoporosis?
Bone health needs to be checked and monitored, like any other health issue. All main risk factors for osteoporosis apply to both men and women... men also have some specific risk factors. Be aware of low testosterone:
The male hormone testosterone helps maintain strong bones, so low testosterone levels can increase your risk of developing osteoporosis and breaking a bone. Some men lose testosterone as they age and certain medications, like therapy for prostate cancer (eg: androgen deprivation therapy), can affect testosterone levels. Men with testosterone deficiency or low testosterone levels can improve their bone density with testosterone replacement.
Have you broken a bone from a minor fall?
If you are over 50 and experience a broken bone from a minor bump or fall you should talk with your doctor about your bone health. The underlying cause could be low bone density.
How is bone health tested?
If your doctor thinks you are at risk of osteoporosis you will be referred for a bone density test. This simple scan measures the density of your bones at the hip and spine. The results will indicate if your bone density is normal, mildly reduced or if you have osteoporosis.
How is osteoporosis treated?
If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis your doctor will determine the best treatment based on your circumstances. Osteoporosis medications can reduce the risk of fractures by up to 60%.
